Fresh US tariffs leave Britain weighing the impact on trade

Britain is assessing a fresh round of tariffs announced by US President Donald Trump, as businesses examine what the new duties mean for exports and prices.

The measures replace a previous global tariff struck down by the US Supreme Court. The UK’s headline rate has not risen in the same way as some countries’, but changes for European Union exporters may reduce an advantage Britain previously held in parts of the American market.

Some products, including Scotch whisky and certain medical technologies, have received more favourable treatment. Ministers say that leaves the UK in a stronger position than first feared, although industry groups are warning that the overall picture remains complicated.

Tariffs are taxes charged on imported goods. They are paid by importing companies, which may absorb the cost or pass some of it to customers. British manufacturers will now study the detailed product lists while the government considers whether further talks with Washington can protect important industries and jobs.
