Heat alerts issued as parts of England could reach 30°C
Health officials are urging people to take care during another hot, dry weekend.
Yellow heat-health alerts cover large parts of England this weekend, with temperatures forecast to reach around 30°C in some areas. The warnings apply to London, the Midlands, the east, south-east and south-west until Sunday morning.
The UK Health Security Agency says prolonged warmth could put extra pressure on health and social care services. Older people, babies and those with existing conditions are most likely to be affected, though anyone can become unwell if they overheat or become dehydrated.
The alert arrives during an unusually dry spell. Some regions are already in drought status, while millions of households face hosepipe restrictions. Fire services have also warned that parched ground can allow outdoor fires to spread rapidly.
People are advised to drink regularly, keep indoor spaces cool and check on anyone who may struggle in the heat. Drivers are also expecting a busy weekend as schools break up and millions begin summer journeys.
