Anthony Joshua returns to boxing tonight against Albanian heavyweight Kristian Prenga in Saudi Arabia, with a long-discussed fight against Tyson Fury potentially awaiting the winner.

It will be Joshua’s first appearance since a car accident in December killed two of his close friends. The former world champion has said their memory will be central to his return as he begins a new multi-fight agreement.

Joshua enters as the favourite, but Prenga brings a 20-win, one-loss record and a significant physical presence. The Albanian has promised to disrupt plans for an all-British contest between Joshua and Fury.

Reports suggest a Fury bout is already being developed, although boxing’s biggest fights frequently depend on negotiations, fitness and the result immediately in front of each athlete. Joshua cannot afford to look beyond tonight’s opponent.

The event includes a large undercard and will be shown through DAZN pay-per-view. For Joshua, the evening is both a sporting comeback and an emotional return after a profoundly difficult period.
